How Long Before The News Is Delivered Direct to Our Computers? (Part 2)

1 April 2010

Naturally people will be more inclined to pay or set up a subscription for news content from highly trusted firms. You will not find any who are more highly thought of or respected than the BBC, and they may well now be the only “free” news provider left online (although in the words of Robert A Heinlein “TANSTAAFL”– see licence fee). Such periodicals and quality broadsheets like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Guardian, The Times and Economist could all easily charge for access to online news.As a classic example, can anyone seriously doubt that people would have been queuing up to hand over their money to enable them to get more details on the Telegraph’s huge scoop about our MP’s expenses, this was a great story from a well trusted source.

What is Quality?

Can you truthfully say that you would be happy paying for sites that aren’t good quality? In other words, even though this works well for the broadsheets, can you see it working quite so well for the tabloids like the News of the World and the Sun?Is there any chance you would pay money to read the “exclusive” interviews with these so called celebs, or perhaps to see a Page 3 girl? I would hazzard a guess that the answer to this is probably yes.  Many people would do just that because after all, it depends on how you define “quality”.  The tabloids like the Sun, in my opinion,  are in fact very high quality because they are well written, well crafted, deliberately entertaining and they know exactly who they are talking to and what they want.

News is a Precious Commodity

So basically paying a charge for news will happen and ultimately it will be successful.  Partly because it’s Murdoch behind it and partly because it all makes sense and may well be the only route to survival open to hard pressed newspapers. It’s not like we don’t already pay a charge for a newspaper right now.   That cover charge has always been ludicrously low in the UK (thanks to the Northcliffe philosophy) compared with the cover charge for equivalent quality European or US broadsheets.  So if you physically fork out for your news via print (and in reality you’re paying for it through the TV and radio via the licence fee too) and seem happy to pay for various apps or Premier League Football on Sky,  then why wouldn’t you pay for such a precious commodity as news?

Apple Changes Its Plans: 4G To Be Out Soon

28 February 2010

For all those waiting for Apple iPhone 4G, here’s some good news: iPhone 4G may be launched in market sometime in May. The guys at iphonehelp. in just did a post giving out data on the release of iPhone 4G and why Apple preponed the launch.

The reasons are simple- To stay ahead of other Smartphone those are to be released in the coming few months. A couple of of that are:

Google’s Android Operating System”.

Sometime in June Google will come out with its improved Android OS. Android surely is new in the market, but it’s doing really well. And now that Google Nexus is out, we will get to see a lot more Android powered gadgets.

Nokia’s New Models:

Last year in 2009, Nokia had stated that it will bring lots of new cell phone in 2010. So iPhone 4G may face competition with Nokia phones too.

Tablet PCs:

Besides, this year we will get to see many Tablet PCs- one from Apple itself(in fact Apple may be regarded the leader of Tablet PCs) . Apple sure knows how its Tablet(iSlate) and iPhone 4G vary and would win the users. But since not much about other brand Tablets are revealed, iPhone 4G might not do so great in the market.

Other Smartphones:

This year many brands are going to get included to the Smartphone makers list. Few of those will be: Dell, Acer, Samsung etc. All these phone might overshadow Apple’s iPhone 4G. And which may lead to reduced sales unlike the great number of iPhone 3GS sold last year. True that people are awaiting the launch of iPhone 4G, but with these many Smartphone being released to the public a lot may not notice the iPhone.

It then makes it clear why Apple changed the iPhone’s release.

Acer To Be The First One To Come Out With Google Chrome OS Netbook

12 January 2010

Many of you already know, Google, in the coming year -2010, will release the much expected Google Chrome OS. But before that the race between different netbook companies to win the market has already started.  A couple of days back Dell brought out a compatible version for mini netbooks. Though Dell is not named in the official partner list by Google, it still helped itself get all the attention by introducing this compatible version.

Second in the row is Acer, which is claiming to be the first one to manufacture a netbook to support Google Chrome OS.  In fact Acer has already begun the manufacturing work (started sometime in mid 2009).If Acer will live up to its claim or not cannot be said now. Last time we all saw that Acer failed in making netbooks those were to support Android (users could not install anything on these Android netbooks. Only the battery lasted longer with Android running on the netbook). This time Acer may actually be the first one to bring out netbooks for Chrome OS. But like I said earlier, nothing is confirmed.

For those who still do not know much about the Chrome OS news, Google Chrome Operating system will act both like a browser and an operating system. With that one will not have to install various tools, softwares etc. Everything will be present on cloud; and one can just take it from there, use it and return it to the cloud. Simple. Once out in the market, the Chrome OS will make things so much different. So now you get why the race is so important.

We only hope is that users get a good, convenient to use netbook for Google Chrome Operating System. Until then let’s wait and watch who else joins the race. There are already two…

Dell Out With A Compatible Version Of Google Chrome OS

3 January 2010

Google’s Chrome OS, perhaps, is the most looked forward to thing in 2010. The fact that everything is going to be on cloud and that users will not require to install anything (any tools, softwares etc.) makes Google Chrome a useful thing. A software that will work both as your operating system and the web browser is a sure thing to have in your computer. Also, it is said that with Google Chrome as your Operating system, it would take only seven seconds to get on to Internet.  Well, that’s definitely too fast!

I did know about all this (the news of Google Chrome OS is everywhere), but was quite surprised to know that Dell has already made available a compatible version for mini 10v netbook users. I found the information on this tech blog – onlygizmos.com. I personally am waiting to use the actual Google Chrome OS, but until then Dell version would be a great thing to play with.

Anybody can download this 10v compatible version from the link given on the post – Dell Honours Geeks, Gives Chrome OS to Play With. You will also find a link to the instruction set on how to download and use the version. It’s a simple work. You can load the file in a USB and then get on using it.

Dell users are sure having a great time getting to use the Google Chrome OS, a 10v version though. Until the actual Google Chrome OS comes out in the market for public usage (and that’s not until 2010), all internet fanatics may use this compatible version by Dell.

But a word of caution: The application may have certain issues, so users are required to be very careful while downloading and using it. WiFi connectivity can cause a lot of problems. Nonetheless, it is worth trying out Dell’s work.
